The Oyster Inn, Butley

What is the pub actually called?

The pub’s name often causes confusion! First known as The Great Oyster in licence inn tax records in 1617, the pub has been officially called The Oyster Inn ever since but locals always refer to it verbally as the Butley Oyster. This can lead to many misunderstandings, as just down the road in Orford is the lovely fish restaurant, The Butley Oysterage. In nearby Pin Mill is The Butt and Oyster pub, which sounds the same as the Butley Oyster over the phone or with a strong accent!

So: The Oyster Inn, Butley is our written address; the Butley Oyster is our affectionate nickname.
